About Us

A lot has changed in the funeral profession since 1889, when great-great-grandfather Watkins opened Watkins Funeral Home in downtown Hagerstown. A cabinetmaker by trade, Mr. Watkins established the funeral home that would continue through five generations—and counting.
Early funeral services included horse-drawn hearses and professional funeral services. In later years, the funeral home also provided ambulance services to local and area hospitals.
Mr. Watkins’ daughter, Mary Watkins, married Scott F. Minnich, and the business became known as Scott F. Minnich and Sons Funeral Home. Scott F. Minnich had two sons, John and Frank, both of whom followed in their father’s footsteps.
In 1958, John and Frank decided to build a new funeral home at the current location. The 14-acre property became the site of a modern facility offering a complete range of funeral services. When John died in 1966, Frank was joined in the family business by his son, Scott M. Minnich. After Frank Minnich passed away in 2000, Scott M. Minnich, Sr. continued operating the business.
Scott M. Minnich, Sr. was married to D. Diona Wallers Minnich until her passing in 2024. Together, they had two sons, Frank J. and Scott M. Minnich, Jr., who now operate the business. Scott Jr. has proudly served as a funeral director since 2005 and is honored to be the fifth generation to carry on the family tradition. Frank is equally involved in the business and oversees the operation of Hagerstown Crematory, located on the funeral home premises.
A recent addition to the facility expanded operations and added a second crematory, which was completed in January 2013. Scott’s son, Andrew, and Frank’s son, Michael, are also involved in the family business.
