Obituary

Yukiko "Sue" Hamai Dorsey, 95, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, at Meritus Medical Center.

She was born on July 1, 1930, in Sapporo, Japan, to the late Hisashi and Otake (Sasaki) Hamai.

After graduating from high school, Sue moved to Misawa, Japan, where she worked at the Air Force Base Exchange (BX). It was there that she met Dave, an Air Force sergeant and air traffic controller. The two later married and began their family. In 1952, Dave brought his family to the United States, arriving in Hagerstown on Thanksgiving Day. Sue embraced her new home and culture with grace and determination, eventually becoming a proud American citizen April 10, 1958.

Sue was fondly remembered by generations of students at Lincolnshire Elementary School, where she first served as a kindergarten aide and later as the school secretary. One of her favorite responsibilities was collecting lunch money in the cafeteria each day, where she greeted every child by name and shared a smile.

Sue was a devoted member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church. She served faithfully on the altar committee and was known for her meticulous care in arranging the altar flowers. She also was involved in all the fundraising events at the church, especially the making of the delicious easter eggs and hard candy. In retirement, Sue volunteered at Homewood in the Mitten Shop. Sue and Dave were passionate volunteers at the ARCC at HCC. They were honored for their countless hours with The People's Choice Award as well as being inducted into the HCC Sports Hall of Fame.

Sue is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, David Lee Dorsey; her daughters, Sukey Rankin and husband Robert, and Janet Brakenwagen, and "fur baby," Aijou; her grandson, Col. Derek Rankin and wife Lesley; and her great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Brooks Rankin.

Services will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HCC Foundation, 11400 Robinwood Dr., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 1020 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
