WILLIAM RAYMOND "WILD BILL" SMITH, 17008 Hillsdale Court, Lakeside Park, Hagerstown, Maryland, a beloved husband, father, uncle and grandfather, died peacefully on Thursday, May 03, 2007 at his home. He fought a hard battle for two years with CHF and COPD and never complained. According to him he was always fine. Born January 1, 1933 in Hagerstown, Maryland, was the son of the late Harry Victor Smith, Sr. and Ruth Esther Souders Smith. He was a 1952 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1955. He was employed as a gear cutter at Mack Truck and retired in 1999 after thirty-three years of service. He worked for D.L. Zimmerman as a security guard at Mack Trucks, Inc. after his retirement. He also worked for various road construction companies and helped with the building of Interstate 81. In his younger years he was know as "Legs" as he ran all over Hagerstown. He was a member of Hagerstown Mack Golden Bulldogs, United Auto Workers Local 171, Moose Lodge #2435 in Funkstown, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and AARP. He enjoyed life, fishing, playing bingo and doing things for and with family and friends. He loved helping others who needed help and also helped with Lakeside neighborhood watch. He loved watching Bob Barker on Price Is Right. He loved watching his children in swim competition with the local Y.M.C.A, also watching his grandchildren playing sports. He took what ever came his way, good or bad. He was definitely a keeper. You couldn't have found better. He is survived by his beloved wife, best friend and caregiver for over forty-five years, Lois Elizabeth Baker Smith. They were married October 5, 1961; two daughters, Michele Smith of Big Pool, and friend, Doug Claytor, and Lida Portner and husband, Harry Portner of Clear Spring, Maryland; one sister, Betty French of Brunswick, Maryland; grandsons, Dustin Dyer and Derek Dyer of Clear Spring, Maryland and their father, Gilbert Dyer; nieces, nephews and cousins, good friends, Helen Nikon and Adele Herold; father-in-law, George E. Baker, Sr.; brothers-in-law, Jeff Baker, David Baker and family, George Baker, Jr. and family and Robert Baker and family. He was preceded in death by his mother in law, Hazel M. Baker; two brothers, Harry V. Smith and George Smith; four sisters, Arlene Schlotterbeck, Charlotte Smith, June Smith and Helen Smith ; various nephews, nieces and cousins. He had a great relationship with his father and mother in law, George E. Baker, Sr. and Hazel M. Roof Baker. Services will be Monday May 7 at 11:00 a. m. at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown, Maryland. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided at the cemetery by the American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42..
