In 1958 he was working at the Santa Rosa Press Democrat as a reporter when Clem Miller (Dem.) was elected Congressman from the 1st District in California. Miller invited Duddleson to accompany him to Washington as legislative assistant. In 1962 President Kennedy signed the Point Reyes National Seashore bill into law. Less than a month later, Clem Miller was killed in a plane crash while campaigning for reelection. His widow, Katy Miller, and Bill Duddleson, among others, continued to work, carrying out Miller's dream forming and protecting the park. Duddleson then worked for the Citizens Committee for the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission Report, a Lawrence Rockefeller-chaired commission. From 1968-1978 he was a senior associate at the Conservation Foundation, the organization that helped organize and found Earth Day. He is the author or co-author of several books on national parks and conservation. William Duddleson retired from the Department of the Interior in 1989, but he remained devoted and active in the preservation and enhancement of Pt. Reyes National Seashore until his final illness. He considered his beloved Pt. Reyes his greatest accomplishment and with Pt. Reyes, he leaves a legacy for future generations. He is survived by his wife, Denise L. Duddleson; and four of his children, Bon Prouty (husband Mark), Stephen Duddleson, Mary Ann Moen (husband Jim), and Helen Clark (husband Gary); his grandchildren, Katy Mayer, Ted Prouty, Colleen Clark, Will Duddleson, and Gemma Linden; and his great-grandchildren, Henry, Gus, and George Prouty.
