Obituary

Virginia Cornelia "Ginny" Gibney, 94, of Hagerstown, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died January 20, 2024, at Potomac Valley Nursing Home in Rockville, MD where she resided for the past 5 years. Born June 18, 1929, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Velna E. Mongan Nelson and the late Hayden J. Nelson. Ginny was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Charles A. "Bud" Gibney Jr. in 2013.

Ginny was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School. After graduation she trained at West Baltimore General Hospital School of Nursing. Upon completion of her training in 1950 she returned to Hagerstown to begin her nursing career and marry her high school sweetheart Bud Gibney.

After working at Washington County Hospital for several years, Ginny then worked for 25 years as a private duty nurse. She later worked in the family business, Charles A. Gibney Florist, until her retirement.

Ginny was a 60+ year member of Grace United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Grace Class Sunday School. She enjoyed playing cards and for years played regularly with several card groups. Ginny and Bud worked together for many years organizing the class reunions for the Hagerstown High School Class of 1947.

Ginny was an excellent cook and baker. She was especially known for her delicious pies. She loved being a grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Ginny touched many lives and will be greatly missed. She leaves behind many wonderful memories.

She is survived by three daughters, Pamela (Gibney) Harrison and husband Tom of Armonk, NY, Rebecca (Gibney) Glesner and husband Edwin of Surfside Beach, SC, and Cheryl (Gibney) Cannon and husband Wayne "Jack" of Hagerstown, seven grandchildren, Katie (Glesner) Culic of West Chester, OH, Erin (Glesner) Bent of Pikesville, MD, Lindsay (Harrison) Lukeman of Larchmont, NY, Stacey (Cannon) Moore of Hedgesville, WV, Tyler Cannon of Martinsburg, WV, and Michael Harrison and Matthew Harrison, both of Westport, CT, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Ginny was preceded in death by her sister, Catherine "Kit" Hoch Loudin and her brother Herald J. "Buddy" Nelson.

The family will receive friends on Thursday Jan. 25, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home. Pastor Dionne Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
