"Ted" Theodore Corey Athey, 61, of Hagerstown, MD, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving wife, Kris, and his adored twin daughters, Rachel and Megan.
He was born September 27, 1962, in Cumberland, MD. He was the son of Willard O. Athey, Jr. and Edith Mae (Boone) Athey. He graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1980. Ted proudly served in the United States Navy as CE2 from 1981-1987. He was a second-class petty officer. He received an Associate Degree in Engineering at Alleghany Community College in 1988. He joined the Local 307 Electrician's Union in May 1989. He worked as a journeyman/wireman. He started his own electrical business in June 2003. He looked after his daughters and did substitute teaching and sold insurance.
Ted loved sports. He played football and baseball at Fort Hill High School. Ted enjoyed going to Fort Hill football games every year. He loved watching the horse races as well. He was passionate about politics and loved to debate. He wanted a better world and equality for all. He enjoyed playing golf. He enjoyed traveling with his family to the beach and taking cruises. He loved music and dancing. He would be found singing karaoke on cruises and recording himself singing songs on Facebook. He passed his love of music onto his daughters. He enjoyed spending lunchtime at McDonald's with his friends. He spoiled his cats. He enjoyed feeding the squirrels and birds. But most of all, he loved doting on his daughters – who else would've taught them how to slurp spaghetti?
He is survived by his wife "Kris"tina Athey and twin daughters, Rachel and Megan. He is also survived by his sisters, Pansy Hedrick and husband, Carl, of Cumberland, MD, and Nancy Stonebraker of Cumberland, MD; his brother, Willard O. Athey III of Rawlings, MD; nieces, Stacey Shockey and husband, Chris, of Lonaconing, MD, and Crystal Stonebraker of Wiley Ford, WV; and nephews, Joshua Blacker and wife, Cheree, of Cornelius, NC, David O. Phillips, Jr. of Oregon, and Christopher Athey of Rawlings, MD. He has multiple great nieces and nephews as well as great-great niece and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard O. Athey, Jr. and Edith Athey.
A graveside service will be held at 11am on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Sunset Memorial Park, 13800 Bedford Rd NE, Cumberland, MD. Pastor Bill Divelbiss will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD, on Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 6-8pm.
