Shirley Louise Buckwalter, née Reay, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. Born in Windber, PA, Coal Miners Hospital, on February 14, 1934, to the late Olive and Raymond Reay. She was raised in Eureka, Mine 42 and graduated from Adams High School in 1951.
Shirley was a stay-at-home mother and housewife. She was active in the SHHS Band Boosters when her children attended school. She was an avid bingo player. She worked at Bestform in Windber and at Hickory Farms in the Valley Mall during the holiday season for many years. She was also an in-home childcare provider to many children whom she loved.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Nevin Barefoot; brother, Raymond Reay, Jr.; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Ann Buckwalter.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Regis L. Buckwalter, with whom she recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. Shirley and Regis shared 86 years together. First as neighbors, childhood friends, and then as lifelong partners. Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Tammy Buckwalter (Mark Petersen), Kelly Buckwalter, and Karen Buckwalter-Kotch (Stephen Kotch); grandchildren, Matthew Buckwalter, Michael Buckwalter (Elizabeth), Jessica Pryor (Caleb), Christian Kotch, Zachary Kotch, MacKenzie Kotch, Alexander Daniels, and Joshua Daniels; great-grandchildren, Myles Buckwalter, Quinn Buckwalter, Dax Buckwalter, and Oliver Pryor; sister-in-law, Anastasia Reay; special family, Craig Daniels and Mike Felix; many wonderful nieces and nephews in the Barefoot, Buckwalter, and Reay families; and her best friend, Mary Jane Keller.
If you met her, you would know she never met a stranger.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Monday, October 23, 2023, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave, Hagerstown, MD. Rev. Randall Reid will officiate.
A visitation will be held at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD, on Sunday, October 22, 2023, from 7-9pm.
