Obituary

Shirley Anne (Hines) Barr, 88, died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Coffman Nursing Home. Born December 23, 1934 in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Jacob Markwood Hines.

Shirley was a loving and devoted wife to her husband of 58 years, Bill Barr, who preceded her in death in 2016. She was a proud and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law and friend who cherished all of her family and friends.

Shirley was a very caring and compassionate woman who always reached out to help others and enjoyed entertaining. She was also known for her beautiful soprano singing voice and sang at different churches and events throughout Hagerstown.

Shirley worked at the Hearld Mail and Hopkins & Gruber until the birth of her first child and then she became a stay-at-home mom and housewife. After her children were grown, she volunteered at the Washington County Hospital for over 25 years. She was also an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and singing in the church choir.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Kathy Barr; son, Bill and wife, Joyce Barr; grandchildren, Emily and husband. Forrest Barney, Jacob Barr and fiancée, Alexandra Werder; great-grandchildren, Cynthea and Jesse Barney; sister-in-law, Rose and husband, Ron Sweeney; and sister-in-law, Colleen Shank; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Shirley will be deeply missed, but family and friends praise God for the blessing of having her in their lives and look forward to seeing her again one day.

Services will be held at 11am, Friday, September 29, 2023 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Pastor Hoda Zavandro and Pastor Brian McClinton will officiate. Burial will be at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 28, 2023 from 6 to 8pm at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740; St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740; or Hospice of Washington County, 1710 Underpass Way, Suite 300, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

The family would also like to thank all of the staff at Coffman Nursing Home for their excellent care and support of mom and her family.
