SCOTT EDWARD 'SCOTTY' McCATHRAN passed away Sunday July 20, 2014 at his home. Born on December 20, 1963, Scott was the only son of Carole Frye McCathran Lockitsky and the late Rodney R. McCathran Jr. The tapestry of Scotty's life was woven with colorful, vibrant threads. Energetic and curious from childhood, he moved through life sharing his unique personality, style and gifts with all he met. He was sensitive and caring; generous with his time and talents. Scotty was consistently thoughtful of others, a loyal son, brother, and friend. Sustained by a deep spirituality rooted in the natural world, from childhood to adulthood Scotty especially enjoyed the water. He swam fearlessly like a fish, enjoyed canoeing trips on the Potomac with his father, ocean vacations at the OBX with extended family, and solitary diving trips to the Caribbean Islands. Mountains also spoke to Scotty. He enjoyed hikes up Sugarloaf Mountains, camping and sleeping in his hammock under the stars. Scotty had a creative eye that expressed itself in many ways: from pencil sketches to still photography. His creative eye served him well in his professional life, a photo journalist with Fox News, where he ran a live truck and had a special knack for framing shots. Scotty received an Emmy for his work; he was the first news photographer on the scene at the Pentagon on 9-11. Those early images viewed by all were his. Another time he caught footage of a bank robbery in progress which was used by the FBI to bring the perpetrators to justice. Scotty had a passion for music expressed through drumming in his teenage years, playing for the Damascus High School Band. As an adult he followed the career of his musical idol Shannon Larkin, drummer for Godsmack. One of his prized possessions is a set of drumsticks given by Shannon Larkin to him at a backstage meeting. Scotty expresses his unique perspective on life, through his own style of bawdy humor and crazy fun. He had an ability to help others laugh and his smile radiated the nature of his warm caring heart. Scotty was a cherished son, beloved brother, much loved Uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. His short life was an overflowing gift to all he knew. He was a gift to all of us. Taken away too soon, we hug him closely in our hearts. He will be greatly missed. Scotty is survived by his mother, Carole Lockitsky of Hagerstown; four sisters, Cheryl McCathran of Delmar, NY., Tori Evans of Hagerstown, Marli Lockitsky of Frederick, MD., Edie Lane and husband JD of Fredericksburg, VA.; one brother, Robert Shannah McCathran of Salt Lake City, UT.; his uncle, Gene Frye and wife Elaine; cousin Brian Frye of Falling Waters WVA.; five nieces and nephews, Jacob and Gracie Evans, Ethan and Medelanine Lane and Shannah McCathran; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins across the U.S. Scotty was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Gertrude Frye, by five days; his father, Rodney R. McCathran Jr., brother- in- law, Steven Banks; brother, David McCathran. A memorial service will be held Saturday August 9, 2014 at 11:00 am with lunch to follow, at Maugansville Bible Brethren Church, 17904 Brinkley Ave. Maugansville, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his mother, Carole Lockitsky, at their shared home, 921 Harwood Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21740, to help defray both funeral and transitional expenses.
