Obituary

Russell Charter Chew Jr., 89, of Williamsport, Maryland, passed away on April 3, 2026. Born April 1, 1937, in Staunton, Virginia, he was the son of the late Russell Chew Sr. and Leila Gladden (Hook) Chew. He lived a life defined by faith, service, and a love of learning.

A 1959 graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Russell went on to teach at St. James School, where he left a lasting impression on his students. He also proudly served in the United States Army, reflecting his deep sense of duty and patriotism.

He was a devoted member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, where his faith remained central throughout his life. Russell had a deep passion for Civil War history and was known as an avid enthusiast. He also dearly loved his dogs.

He will be laid to rest at 10am on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia.

Russell will be remembered for his spirited nature, steadfast faith, and lifelong curiosity, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and warmth.
