Robert Eugene Russell, 81, previously of Green Meadow Lane in Hagerstown, MD, died Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Somerford Assisted Living, located on Sharpsburg Pike. Born August 26, 1934 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John Henry Russell and Helen Clayburn Russell. "Bobby" grew up near the Hagerstown Fairgrounds where he worked as a teenager and acquired a life-long affection for horses. In the early 1950's, Bobby got a job in Hagerstown at the Southern Shoe Factory making army tarps. A young lady by the name of Frances Wiles of Clear Spring, MD was also hired. They married in 1953 and enjoyed sixty years together until her death in November, 2013. After leaving the shoe factory, Bobby worked at Jamison Door Company for 42 faithful years where he acquired many life-long friends among his co-workers. His hobbies included bowling and golfing. He closely followed horse racing, baseball, basketball, football, and other sports. He is survived by two sisters, Juanita Kann of Williamsport and Mary "Sis" Kann of Hagerstown; one brother, Ronald Russell and wife Mary Ann, of Hagerstown; and one sister-in-law, Anna Russell of Hagerstown. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who adored their "Uncle Bobby." He was preceded in death by one brother, Aldean "Bud" Russell, and two brother-in-laws, Robert Kann and Jack Kann. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd, Hagerstown. Chaplain Mike Simane will officiate. Burial will be at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. The family wishes to thank former caregivers Mary Dagenhart and Betty Sigel for their care of both Bobby and Frances; to the staff at Somerford Assisted living for Bobby's care; and to Hospice of Washington County for their compassionate care of both Bobby and Frances during the last two and a half years.
