Robert Joseph Hicks, 86, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2020. He was born on January 5, 1934 in Neodesha, KS, to the late Howard Gilbert Hicks and Ruby Surmon Hicks. Robert was a career Chief Petty Officer for the United States Navy working on submarines in communication and location services. He later continued his many years of service as a Merchant Marine. He was an avid hunter and storyteller and loved nature. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Redmond Hicks, and his brother, Gilbert Hicks. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Gloria Hicks, his son, Robert J. Hicks Jr. and his wife, Diana of Dover, DE, his daughter, Shelby McGinley and her husband, Michael of Hagerstown, four stepchildren, three grandchildren, five step grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, five nieces and nephews in Lincoln, NE, and many dear friends. Family and friends are welcomed for a visitation on Friday, August 14, 2020 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard in Hagerstown. Face masks/coverings will be required and social distancing will be encouraged. A funeral service will begin at 7:00pm, following the visitation, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
