Obituary

Robert "Bob" L. Glessner, Jr. of Hagerstown, MD passed away peacefully on October 15, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Born January 12, 1938, he was the son of the late Robert L. Glessner, Sr. and Dorothy (Kentner) Glessner. Bob was a 1955 graduate of Chambersburg High School. As a youngster, he was a standout baseball player for the Chambersburg Maroons. He also worked at Nitterhouse Concrete where he loaded cement bags and developed brute strength. He later served in the U.S. Army where he was a boxer with an impressive record of 7 wins, 0 losses and 1 draw. After an honorable discharge from the army, he was offered a job to repossess cars which ultimately launched his career in (Chambersburg) banking where he eventually became Vice President. In the 60s, Bob traveled around the country as a national sales director / recruiter for a large multi-level health and beauty company. Bob always liked to set goals and never gave up until he achieved them. He set a goal to meet Elvis Presley. He eventually talked his way into Graceland and had an opportunity to sit down with Elvis and pitch his product. It is unclear whether he made the sale or not. In 1972, Bob founded Glessner Protective Services, Inc. (Glessner Technologies) with his wife Doris (Doey) Glessner. The business began in the basement of their home on Hamilton Blvd in Hagerstown, and grew it into one of the regions largest electronic security companies. His business later expanded with two more divisions that offer telephone systems and computer networking services. He was one of the alarm industries last true great salesman and he believed wholeheartedly that his products saved lives, which made it very difficult to say no to him. He would motivate his salesmen by saying, "Dont tell me this job is hard. I used to sell radio advertising. You dont know how hard it is to sell air. Youre selling a product that saves lives." As a result, he grew his company to now having thousands of commercial and residential customers in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and DC. Bob mentored many people during his career. The two that hes most proud of were long-term and current employees, David Dick and Darcy Kline. They began their careers with him as vocational high school interns and ultimately became successful salesmen and senior Vice Presidents of their respective divisions. They are also partners in the company. He was a charter member and officer of Chambersburg Motorknights, a hot rodding and social club, that was based in Chambersburg, PA during the 60s. In 1967, Bob with his beloved 65 mustang, also earned the reputation of being one of the fastest cars in the country when he set a national drag racing record in the G-stock quarter-mile class. During his retirement, he enjoyed driving and tinkering with his small collection of classic cars. He was a regular participant in many local and regional car shows where he often displayed his Mustang convertible of which he was the original owner. His mustang won many trophies and was featured in several car magazines. Bob loved to engage in conversation with total strangers and making friends. He enjoyed passing out his business cards that had a picture of his Mustang on the back. He also proudly gave away hundreds of hats that displayed his company logo. Bob is survived by two sons, Stephen A. Glessner of Frederick, MD, Neal R. Glessner of Hagerstown, and daughter-in-law Mary Glessner of Smithsburg, MD; one brother, Michael Glessner; six grandchildren, Amanda Glessner, Travis Glessner, Holden Hershey, Jordan Glessner, Brooke Glessner, and Luke Glessner; and two great grandchildren, Anthony Stroud and Mason Glessner.
