Robert Edward Cauffman, 70, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Born November 23, 1955, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Leroy Carson and Madeline Marie (Kelbaugh) Cauffman.

Robert was a 1973 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, where he played football. He was an avid bowler and played flag football for the Broad Axe. He loved to travel, especially family trips to Daytona Beach, which created many wonderful memories over the years.

He retired from the Department of Defense as Store Director at Fort Detrick, having begun his career as a bagger at Fort Ritchie shortly after graduating from high school.

A true sports fan, Robert proudly followed the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. He especially enjoyed gathering with family on Sundays to watch football and baseball. Known affectionately as the “Smoker King,” Robert took great pride in smoking food for Sunday games with Daniel and Tyler. These gatherings, filled with good food, sports, and time with those he loved, were among his favorite pastimes.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Diane Cauffman; his son, Tyler Cauffman and wife, Casey; and his nephew, Daniel Rutherford.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service for a viewing. In honor of Robert’s love of sports, family and friends are encouraged to show their support by wearing a sports jersey.

Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
