Robert "Bob" Franklin Zeigler, 89 of Hagerstown, MD, passed away early on Tuesday, February, 28, 2017 at Diakon Ravenwood Senior Living Center after a brief illness. Bob was born November 15, 1927 in Hagerstown and was a lifelong resident of Hagerstown. He was the son of the late Eda V. and Harry W. Zeigler. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marianne Hirshman Zeigler, his three daughters, Dr. Barbara Appel (Robert) of Fayetteville, NC, Jennifer Winograd (Harry) of Atlanta, GA and Providence, RI, Adriane McAvoy (John) of Charleston, SC, his nine grandchildren, Eric Appel (Kate), Christopher Appel (Sherah), Max Winograd (Amanda), Samuel Winograd, Joseph Winograd, Moe Winograd, Drew McAvoy, Elyse McAvoy, and Julia McAvoy, and his great-grandson, Cooper Appel. He is also survived by his brother, Edward Zeigler of Westminister, MD, his sister, Virginia Sprankle of Hagerstown, MD, and many nieces and nephews. Bob was a 1945 graduate of Hagerstown High School and received his B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering in 1950 from the University of Maryland. Bob served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army, 45th Infantry Division, was sent to the Corps of Engineers, Fort Belvoir Officer Candidate School where he received the rank of 2nd Lt. Bob was currently President of his TEOCS-5 class of 1952. After briefly working for N.S. Earley & Son, Bob and his wife founded in 1958 the mechanical engineering and services firm, Robert F. Zeigler, Inc. A subsidiary, Zeigler Technologies, provided clean-room services for the computer chip industry. The company was sold and Bob retired in 1994. Active in business and civic affairs, Bob was Past President of the Southern Engineering Society, charter member of the Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Past President and Campaign Chairman of the United Way, Past President of the YMCA Board of Directors, Past President of the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and Past President of the Hagerstown Exchange Club. Bob and his wife were co-chairs of the Washington County Bi-Centennial Rediscover America celebration, leading Bob to be selected "Exchangite of the Year 1976-1977." He was also selected "Small Businessman of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce in 1987, the second person to receive that award. Bob was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School for many years. He also was a member of Fountain Head Country Club. Bob was an eternal optimist and had a real zest and enthusiasm for living. He loved to travel and enjoyed bike riding, skiing, ice skating, tennis, playing bridge, dominoes and Shanghai rummy, and working crossword puzzles. He and his wife spent many memorable times with family and friends at their vacation home in Ocean City, MD. A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown, MD. Rev. Bettye Wolinski and Rev. Gregory P. Shook will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hagerstown YMCA, 1100 Eastern Blvd., Hagerstown, MD 21742; the American Cancer Society, 1050 Industrial Blvd., Cumberland, MD 21502; or a charity of your choice.
