Obituary

Richard "Dick" Weddle passed away Sunday, November 13, 2016, at the age of 90, a husband/Dad/Grandad/Great Grandad/Uncle/role model/teacher/friend someone who is too unique and irreplaceable to be summed up in the words of an obituary. He was born August 9, 1926, son of the late William Weddle and Dorothy Ruth Mercer. He was, above all, a family man, survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan "Jodie" Weddle, and three children Judith Weddle Elshafie and husband Osama Elshafie of Chicago, IL, David and wife Kathy Weddle of Bunker Hill, WV, and James and wife Bonnie Weddle of Hagerstown, MD. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Jason and wife Laura Weddle, Jennifer Weddle Smith and husband Jonathan Smith, Jeremiah and wife Janelle Weddle, Jamie Weddle Derr and husband Christopher Derr, Sara Elshafie, Erin Weddle, and Nicole Gladden; and by eleven great grandchildren Logan and Taylor Weddle, Christian, Luis, Justin, Benjamin and Matthew Smith, Elijah and Noah Weddle, Levi and Zachary Derr. Richard is also survived by a brother, Kenneth Weddle of Frederick, MD. He was preceded in death by his sisters Dorothy Eyler and Pauline Stanton. Richard was a survivor of the Great Depression, a veteran of World War II (part of the Japanese Occupation Force), and the Korean War. He was a self-made man: farmer, horseman, blacksmith, entrepreneur. He and his wife owned and operated Weddle's Riding School in Hagerstown from 1957 to 1968, and Weddle's Stables until the early 1980's. We have so many happy memories of life on the farm riding, showing and caring for horses, trail riding on the Potomac Canal, harvesting hay, foxhunting with the Antietam Hunt Club. Richard spent the last happy years of his life as a commercial fisherman off the Florida Keys. Again he gave us beautiful memories of blue ocean waters and spectacular fish and boating with dolphins. While his passing brings us deep sorrow we are comforted in the knowledge that his integrity, wisdom, and love will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew him. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at Benevola United Methodist Church, 19925 Benevola Church Rd, Boonsboro, MD 21713. Pastor Cynthia Caldwell and Rev. Dr. Jennifer Weddle Smith will officiate. A light meal will follow the service. There will be no viewing. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SPCA of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21740 or to Benevola United Methodist Church.
