Obituary

Richard Lee Swain, 86, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. He was born on October 19, 1936 to the late Clifford C. Swain and Mary S. Swain.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Patricia A. Swain; his daughter Cristie A. Swain; and two brothers, Maxwell L. Swain and Alfred E. Swain.

He is survived by two daughters, Sherry L. Swain and Debra K. Starr and her husband Jess; one son, Jeffrey S. Swain and his wife Annaliza; one granddaughter, Tiffany L. Turner and her husband Geoffrey; and two great-granddaughters, McKaela and Jamie.

Richard was a 1954 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Immediately following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, completing Basic Training at Sampson Air Force Base in Geneva, NY and follow on vocational training as a Ground Weather Equipment Operator at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL. His assignments included Goose Bay Air Base, Labrador Canada and Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC. He was honorably discharged on March 30, 1958.

Following his discharge from the United States Air Force, Richard returned to Hagerstown, MD and began working as an electrician for Miller-Liskey Electric alongside his brother Gene. He later joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was a proud and active member of IBEW Local 307 based in Cumberland, MD. Over his long career, Richard worked on many projects throughout the area, including the Underground Pentagon and construction of the Valley Mall in 1974.

Following his retirement from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in 1999, Richard enjoyed pursuing his many interests and hobbies, and spending quality time at home with his wife and family.

A joint interment will be planned at a future date for Richard and his wife Patsy at the Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard's name to Hospice of Washington County, 1710 Underpass Way, Suite 300, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
