Richard "Dick" Wayne Snyder, 73, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at UPMC Community Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg, PA. Born September 11, 1950 in Hagerstown, Dick was the son of the late Richard J. and Ethel (Conklin) Snyder.
Dick graduated from South Hagerstown High School with the class of 1968. He continued his education at Hagerstown Junior College, earning his Associate Degree and at Shepherd College, earning a Bachelor of Arts. Dick was a teacher in Washington County Public Schools, teaching social studies at Clear Spring High School for over four decades. He was a member and supporter of National Little League and a long-time Hagerstown Suns season ticket holder. He was passionate about baseball, especially his beloved New York Yankees, and he traveled to many Yankees games, spring training, and the Little League World Series. He shared his love of traveling by hosting bus tours to New York City, Lancaster, Washington, DC, and more.
During his career as a teacher, Dick was the founder and advisor of the Jonathan Nesbitt History Club, which took annual tours of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Williamsburg. The club celebrated its 25th anniversary with a tour of Atlanta. In addition to the History Club, Dick was an avid supporter of the Blazer Band and Blazer Athletics. Along with Noel Kunkle, the band director and friend of over 50 years, he traveled with the band when it was the honor band at the 1973 Kentucky Derby Festival, the Nixon/Agnew inauguration parade, the St. Petersburg Festival of States Festival (Disneyworld), and Festa Flamboyant, San Antonio, Texas, along with trips to New Orleans, Dallas, and Memphis. He served many roles at Clear Spring High School including class advisor, awards committee member, cheerleader coach, Veteran's Day assembly organizer, and graduation coordinator. In addition to his school duties, Dick also accompanied student musicians to Europe from 1983-1997 as the historian with American Music Abroad.
Dick was a member of First Brethren Church and cherished his miniature dachshunds. Dick enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and he loved his extended family. He is survived by his sister Sharon L. Eichelberger (Terry) and his brother Michael S. Snyder (Rebecca); nieces and nephews Tammie Ford, Tom Barnhart, Doug Eichelberger, Don Eichelberger, Mike Snyder, Sarah Smith, and Brett Snyder; great nieces and nephews Brier Barnhart, Savannah Barnhart, Jordy Barnhart, Eden Barnhart, Avery Barnhart, Bryan Eichelberger, Caleb Eichelberger, Gavin Strickler, Maggie Snyder, Jack Snyder, Reagan Smith, and Roland Smith; and great-great nephew, Jalen Eichelberger. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Linda L. Barnhart and Susan A. Snyder, and his nephew, Tim Barnhart.
Per his wishes, Dick was cremated and will be interred next to his parents and sister in Beaver Creek Cemetery at the convenience of family. The family requests no flowers.
