Obituary

Richard E. Monnett, a man of wisdom and wit, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born on August 9, 1941, in Cumberland, MD.

He was preceded in death by father Edward Monnett (step-mother Ethel Grove Monnett) and mother Elizabeth (Santymire) Coffman (step-father Donald Coffman).

After graduating from Ridgeley High School, he answered the call of duty, serving his country with honor in the United States Navy. His commitment to service continued when he joined the Hagerstown City Police Department as a police officer. He was dedicated to the safety of his fellow citizens and considered his fellow officers of the 1970's and 1980's as brothers. His children fondly recall many family dinners with fellow officers at the kitchen table.

Following his time in law enforcement, Richard joined Craig Blacktop and Paving, Inc. where his organization skills made him a valued member of the family business. He loved the late Ollen and Stutzie Craig as if they were his own parents.

Richard's passion for history, particularly regarding the United States' involvement in wars, was profound. He was often found engrossed in books and documentaries, eager to share his knowledge and insights with anyone willing to learn. He was also an ardent car enthusiast and a lifelong admirer of John Wayne, whose films he could quote with an impressive accuracy that delighted his family and friends.

Richard is survived by his loving children: son Mark Monnett of Hagerstown, MD; daughter Nicole Draheim and her husband Leonard of Hagerstown, MD; son Wayne Craig of Hagerstown, MD; son David Monnett of Boonsboro, MD; and daughter Crystal Harris of Cumberland, MD. Richard's legacy continues through his grandchildren; Paul Draheim and wife Angela of St. Inigoes, MD, Lindsey Draheim of Baltimore, MD, Amanda Craig of Los Angeles, CA, Allison Craig of Baltimore, MD, great granddaughter Lorelei Draheim of St. Inigoes MD and bonus granddaughter Rowan Ringely of Boonsboro,MD. Each of them brought immense joy to his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. In his last days, talking about his grandchildren brought him peace and comfort.

To describe Richard as merely "funny" and "wise" would be an understatement. His humor was a source of comfort and connection, often bringing smiles during the most challenging times. His wisdom was not just a product of age but of a life full of experiences that he generously shared to guide others.

As we bid farewell to Richard (aka Dick, Jake, Dad, Pap Pap) we celebrate a life lived with laughter, and love. He will be remembered not just for the life he led but for the lives he touched along the way. His absence will be deeply felt.
