RICHARD EDWARD HARTLEY, 85, of 17918 Golf View Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland, died on Sunday, November 27, 2005 at the Washington County Hospital. Born June 22, 1920 in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Russell and Gertrude Dofflemyer Hartley. He was retired from the U. S. Army as a Sergeant Major after twenty-three years of service. He was employed with the Washington County Hospital for eight years, Site R for eight years, and owned and operated Hartley Electric. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a member of the American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42, the B.P.O.Elks No. 378, the Knights of Columbus, 2nd degree, and the Last Man's Club. He is survived by his wife, Julia DeBiase Hartley; one daughter, Angela Backus of Hagerstown; one son, Richard R. Hartley of Berlin, Maryland; two sisters, Evelyn Smith, and Catherine Taylor, both of Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Gina Taffe of Hagerstown; five grandsons, Christopher Hartley of Bear, Delaware, Bryan Hartley of Berlin, Maryland, Matthew Hartley of South Riding, Virginia, Stephen Smith of Grasonville, Maryland, and Nicholas Backus of Parkersburg, West Virginia; one great granddaughter, Logan Smith; four great-grandsons, Eric Hartley, Carter Hartley, Zachary Hartley, Brendan Hartley; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Domenic Hartley; one sister, Hazel Harvey; and one grandson, Derek Smith. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a. m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev. Robert E. Morey will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the MINNICH FUNERAL HOME, 415 East Wilson Boulevard on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p. m.
