Terry Broadwater climbed all kinds of mountains. He hiked up 14, 000-foot peaks in his new home of Colorado, sought spiritual highs as a minister, and surmounted each day with the perseverancehe himself would probably say stubbornnessof a billy goat. He never met a challenge too steep. He was raised in Barton, Maryland, the son of Marlene and Carroll Broadwater. His mother instilled in him the importance of prayer, and his father taught him the value of hard work. He was a mischievous boypulling pranks and playing ringleader to his younger siblings, Randy and Lisaand he never lost his goofy, fun-loving side, which gave us years of contagious laughter (and deep belly groans at his "dad" jokes). He could tell a story like no other, and by the end of the tale, he'd be cracking himself up along with the rest of us. He enjoyed hiking and hunting, intense Scrabble sessions, eating cereal straight from the box while watching the big game, and wrestling with his German pointer pup, Riley. He met the unending love of his life, Jo Ann, under Fourth of July fireworks at Deep Creek Lake. Their thirty-four-year marriage produced three childrenCasey, a writer and photographer; Corey, a youth pastor and musician; and Cayla, an athlete and aspiring guidance counselorand Terry's talents and interests are immediately evident in each of them. He was a caring husband and attentive father who would do anything for his family, no matter the cost or effort. With his kids spread across the country, he arranged to have them all gather in Colorado for Mother's Day this year, a happy, and now unforgettable reunion. He had recently become a grandpa twice over, and he relished holding Casey and Julianna's baby Elin and playing in the backyard with Corey and Lauren's one-year-old Maddox. We can already see a little of "pap" in their young personalities. He may no longer be with us, but he's certainly not gone. His influence spread beyond his family to the countless lives he affected in three decades of ministry at The Worship Center (Leesburg, VA), Bethel Assembly (Hagerstown, MD), the LifeHouse Church network, and, most recently, as senior pastor of Grace Community Church in Denver, Colorado. To most, he was "Pastor Terry," a teacher and counselor who saw the best in others and encouraged them to find and follow God's purpose for their lives. He was a man of vision and action, planting churches, building connections, and supporting missions-related efforts worldwide. In his final days, he led a team to remote northern India, where his love of the great outdoors and his desire to spread God's word came together for a difficult and beautiful trek between isolated Himalayan villages. An accident on the mountainside took his life far too earlyhe was only 52but his legacy and testimony and impact will long remain, the fruits of a seed that fell. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at LifeHouse Bethel Church, 515 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Maryland. The Revs. Frank Potter, David Grant and John Bosman will officiate. Private graveside service will be Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Rest Lawn Memorial Garden in LaVale, Maryland. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 7, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at LifeHouse Bethel Church. The family requests omission of flowers.
