Since August 2021, Philip Stanley Petry, 80, formerly of Hagerstown, MD, resided at Regency Care of Silver Spring, 9101 Second Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, passed away at Holy Cross Hospital - Silver Spring, Maryland and went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 24, 2025.
Born in Romney, WV on January 19, 1945, he was the son of the late William E. Petry and the late Edith Ann (Knobe) Petry.
Phil graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1963 and attended the University of Maryland from 1963 until 1966. Phil was a Viet Nam Era military veteran, having served three (3) years and was honorably discharged from the United States Army, 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC. Though he could parachute from planes, he had a fear of heights, saying the parachute makes the difference.
Phil was the Quarterback for the only undefeated SHHS football team in 1962 and was named All-American High School Quarterback. Phil was also the Quarterback for the University of Maryland football team. His claim to fame in college was being the Quarterback that gave Penn State's Joe Paterno his first win and also beating Navy when Roger Staubach was its quarterback. Phil also loved his pink dress shirt, saying "only real men can wear pink." During his Army days, he played Quarterback and Tight End for the semi-pro Hagerstown Bears football team. Phil worked majority of his life as a car salesman/car sales manager at various dealerships and owned Greencastle Auto Mart. However, he also had been a mason; a general contractor building 5 houses; drove an over-the-road tractor-trailer; was a B-B-Q pit master; raised pigs and labrador retrievers; assisted coaching football at James Buchannan High School; officiated girls' volleyball and high school football, umpired Pony League & Colt League Baseball, adult baseball, and ladies' high school softball; and at one time was Head Coach of the semi-pro Chambersburg Cardinals.
Phil was a member of Berean Bible Fellowship of Greencastle, PA. He was a Charter member of and served as a past President of the Greencastle Exchange Club, was inducted into and then served as a Director of the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame; was a member of the American Legion Post No. 211 (Funkstown, MD), and was a member and past Vice-President of the Alsatia Club, Inc.
Phil was survived by his best friend and partner of 24 years, Karen (Kline) Luther with whom he enjoyed cruising and playing golf especially in the annual Santee golf trip with 63 guys and a girl (Karen). Phil also has two daughters, Emilie Louree Butt and her husband Jackson of Arkansas, Anna Joelle Petry and husband John Mogielnicki, and grandson Marlo Petry Mogielnicki (and a granddaughter on the way in June) of Portugal, multiple nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by sisters, Ann Petry Wall and Jane Petry Grigoleit, and brothers Thomas Petry, Robert Petry, and William Petry. Phil was also included as family by Karen's family, children Meghan Luther and William Luther, III and grandchildren, Alexis Jenkins and William "Liam" Luther, IV.
At his request, Phil donated his body to the State Anatomy Board-Maryland. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of his life to be held at the Community Volunteer Fire Company of District 12, 18002 Tilghmanton Road, Fairplay, MD, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2025. Service will be officiated by Pastor Gregory Shook.
