PAUL STANLEY SHANK, 101, of Ravenwood Lutheran Village Cottages in Hagerstown, died Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Meritus Medical Center. Born June 29, 1911 in Washington County, Maryland, he was the son of the late Charles M. and Carrie V. (Frush) Shank. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-nine years, Elizabeth (Ground) Shank. He attended Hopewell Elementary and graduated from Williamsport High School in 1929. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years as a pharmacist mate, with an operating room technician rating. Paul worked for Peoples Drug Stores for forty-four years. He was manager of the new Peoples Store on the square in downtown Hagerstown for fifteen years. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught the Temple Builders Class for twenty-eight years and was a church lay leader for twenty years. He was past president of Hagerstown Retail Bureau and a member of Chamber of Commerce. Also was a past member of Hagerstown Rotary Club. He is survived by two children, Karen E. Helfrich and husband, Richard and Jerry G. Shank and wife, Rosalie; four grandchildren, Richard Helfrich, Jr., Stan Shank, Steve Shank and Scott Shank; five great grandchildren, Taylor Shank, Zachary Shank, Zoe Shank, Emily Shank and Mayzi Shank. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Nora Bartles, Ethel Stottlemyer and Eleanor Delaney; and three brothers, Bruce Shank, Lloyd Shank and Edgar Shank. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd. Hagerstown. The Rev. Clark D. Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
