Nettie Connie Lee Gladden, known affectionately to all as Nettie, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025, at the age of 85 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Born on August 24, 1940, in Maryland she was the daughter of the late Rev. Melvin Mayberry Smith and the late Katherine Edna Irene (Kesner) Smith.
Nettie's life was a testament to her loving nature, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Nettie's early years in Maryland laid the foundation for a life filled with love and devotion to her family and her faith as she was one of 15 children. She was a proud member of the Pentecostal community and attended Chestnut Grove Pentecostal Church regularly, where she formed many lifelong friendships and served her community with grace and humility.
Her love for her family was unparalleled. Nettie was a cherished mother to her son, Brian Griffith and his wife Wendy; her daughters, Julie Shank and her husband Dale, and Laurie Griffith. She was also a beloved stepmother to Shirley Newman and her husband Daniel, Debbie Gladden, Rick Gladden and his wife Jeanie, Tommy Gladden, and Daviey Gladden and his wife Kim. Nettie's joy was multiplied by her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry her legacy forward. Nettie's brothers, Raymond Smith and his wife Rose, Albert Smith, and Lester Smith and his wife Gracie, will remember her as a wise and loving sister. She was also a cherished sister-in-law to Virginia Stenger and her husband, Dean. Her presence in their lives was a constant source of comfort and guidance.
A woman of many interests, Nettie found pleasure in the simple joys of life. She was an excellent cook and baker, often sharing her delicious creations with family and friends. Her word puzzles were a favorite pastime, providing not only entertainment but also a way to keep her mind sharp. Above all, Nettie's greatest joy was her family, whom she loved unconditionally and supported in every endeavor.
In addition to her parents, Nettie was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard E. "Mooney" Griffith; her second husband, Joseph E. Gladden; and siblings, Katherine Holmes, Melvin Smith, Charles Smith, Roger Smith, Betty Wolford, Jenny Saunders, Ed Smith, Della Smith, Irvin Smith, Frankie Smith, and Baby Boy Smith.
Nettie's faith-filled life was an inspiration to all who knew her. She walked through life with a strength and dignity that emanated from her deep spiritual roots. Her wisdom and loving nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched.
As we bid farewell to Nettie Connie Lee Gladden, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a soul that has undoubtedly ascended to a place of eternal peace and joy. Her memory will continue to be a beacon of love and faith for all who were blessed to know her. Nettie's spirit will forever be cherished and her life's story will be told with admiration by generations to come.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 12pm on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at the Virginia Avenue Church of God, 17306 Virginia Avenue, Hagerstown, MD.
