Nelda Jane Prather, 93, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away January 6, 2026, at her home.

Born November 16, 1932 in Baltimore County, she was the daughter of the late Norman M. and Nina (Gemmill) Griffin.

Nelda was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Richard "Dick" Prather, Jr. in 2003.

She was a dedicated volunteer with the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary and Meritus Medical Center for 30 years. She was a member of the Funkstown Homemakers Club and Funkstown Fire Co. Women's Auxiliary. Nelda was also a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown.

Nelda is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Eckstine (Jeb); two sons, Dr. Richard Prather III (Karen) and James Prather (Terrie); eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Nancy McDermott. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Suzie.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD, on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 12:00-2:00pm.
