Obituary

Nancy Jean Newkirk, 80, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Sterling Care, in Boonsboro.

Born August 16, 1943, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William G. Shrader, Jr. and Gertrude H. (Myers) Shrader. Nancy was the granddaughter of the late Grant V. and Bessie U. (Faulder) Myers and William G. Shrader, Sr. and Nettie (Shank) Shrader.

She was a graduate of South Hagerstown High School, Class of 1961. Nancy received her AA from Hagerstown Junior College in 1963, a Bachelor's Degree from Shepherd College in 1965, and her Master's Degree from Shippensburg University in 1967.

She taught business subjects at Boonsboro High from 1965-1968 and taught at Bladensburg High from 1968-1969. She taught adult education (mostly typing and shorthand) in both Frederick and Washington Counties for several years. Nancy taught part-time and worked as a school secretary part-time at Middletown Middle School from 1976-1982. She taught business subjects, computer classes and served as Service-Learning Coordinator at Middletown High School where she worked from 1982-2005 when she retired.

Nancy lived in Middletown from 1972-2008 and then moved to Hagerstown. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Funkstown; Hagerstown 89 O.E.S., P.M.; where she served as secretary for many years. She was also a member of Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association; Hagerstown Elks Lodge No.378; Ladies of the Elks and Associations Hagerstown No.378; where she served as secretary, South Hagerstown High Alumni Association, and Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association.

Nancy volunteered at Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown, Myersville Elementary, Adopt-a-Family Program in Middletown, and Elks Lodge 378.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Angle Newkirk, whom she married on June 8, 1968.

Nancy is survived by a son, Jack A. Newkirk II (JA), and wife, Amy Rupert Newkirk; grandchildren, Jack A. Newkirk, III (AJ), and wife, Morgan and Michele Marie Newkirk; brother, Steven William Shrader, and wife, Leila; two nieces; two nephews and numerous cousins.

Services will be held 10am Thursday, April 25, 2024, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 24 E. Baltimore St., Funkstown, MD. Pastor Lee Brumback will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Middletown.

The family will receive friends 6-8pm Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD.
