MURL FRANCIS POWERS, SR., 79, of Boonsboro, Maryland, died on Thursday, August 25, 2005 at the Julia Manor Nursing Home. Born October 6, 1925 in Elkins, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Francis Kadora and Dovie Lillian Howell Powers. He was employed by Western Maryland/Chessie Railroad, and retired in 1985 from CSX Railroad. He was a member of the A.A.R.P., and a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union. He managed at the West End Little League in the 1950's, and umpired Youth baseball. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, June Lorraine Randall Powers; one daughter, Vickie Sampson of Hagerstown; three sons, Roger Powers of Hagerstown, Murl Powers, Jr., and wife, Patti, of Hagerstown, and Donald Powers, and wife, Angie, of Fairplay, Maryland; three sisters, Okreta Blake of Front Royal, Virginia, Wanda Sharp, and Joyce Maize, both of Elkins, West Virginia; seven grandchildren, Katrina, to whom he was not only a grandfather but a father, and her husband Terry Baker, Kristian and Trina Powers, Katrina and Michael Nakopoulos, Ronald and Holly Carter, Adam Powers, Jason Powers, and Karlina Powers; and seven great-grandchildren, Jennifer Crawford, Jessica Crawford, Haley Carter, Emma Nakopoulos, Rhett Carter, Jacob Nakopoulos, and Philip Powers.. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Bernice McClaine, Juanita Fansler, and Arveda Daymon; and one brother, Jarret Powers. Memorial service will be held at 7:00 p. m. Monday at the St. James Brethren Church. Rev. Brian H. Moore will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the King's Kids Ministry, St. James Brethren Church, 17718 Lappans Road, St. James, Maryland 21781.
