Williamsport Miriam Fairley Helsing, 97, long-time resident of Homewood of Williamsport, died Friday, June 19, 2015 at her home. Born in 1918 in Springfield, Mass., she was the daughter of the late James and Bertha Tribelhorn Fairley. She was married for 51 years to the late Dr. Knud J. Helsing. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Boston University. She taught music in Vermont and was the Superintendent of Music for the Hamden County Schools in Massachusetts in the years immediately following college. After raising her children, she became a substitute teacher in the Washington County school system. Her love of music was one of the legacies that her children (and many others) benefited from. She also had a passion for bridge, and she was involved over the years in a number of organizations: Alpha Phi sorority, League of Women Voters, AAUW, The Women's Club, Longmeadow Homemakers, numerous PTAs, Presbyterian Women, the Congregational Church of Longmeadow, Mass., the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Williamsport, Washington County Hospital volunteers, Girl Scouts, AFS, bell choir, and the Homewood community store. She was also a longtime supporter and patron of the Community Concert Association. Mim was generous with her time, talents and devotion to her family. She was currently a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Williamsport. She is survived by her sister Gertrude Cigliano; three children: Deborah Helsing Williams (David), Jane Elizabeth Helsing (Bryan Eichenwald), and Steven Fairley Helsing (Hilda); six grandchildren (Becky Williams, Erik Helsing, Biz Kelly, Lissa O'Donnell, Sarah Williams, Tim Williams); six great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and ten step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She loved them, and was admired by them all. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Williamsport. The Reverend Mark Sandell will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Williamsport, Maryland.
