Michael Patrick Koch Sr. went his eternal peaceful rest surrounded by his family on Dec.11, 2009. Michael was born May 21, 1960, in Encino, California to Rosemary (Newton) Koch from Louisville, Kentucky and John Benjamin Koch from Jeffersonville, Indiana who now reside in Hagerstown Md. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jodie (Pearce) Koch, son Michael Patrick Koch Jr. and daughter Jacqueline Koch, and his precious dog Bucky. He is also survived by three sisters and their husbands, Toni (Koch) & Ernest (Rocky) Nelson of Hagerstown Md., Tracy (Koch) & Tony Froitzheim, Long Key, Florida, and Tammy (Koch) & Michael Needy from San Diego, and half sister Elizabeth Ryan of Charlestown, Indiana. In-laws Harlean & Jim Shook, and sister in-law Paula & husband Trevor Schneider. He is survived by 8 nephews Jacob Nelson, Joseph Nelson, Joshua Nelson, John Needy, James Needy, Maddox Schneider, Brian Dougherty and Patrick Dougherty and 1 niece Mylee Schneider. Michael had many beloved cousins, aunts & uncles whom he made a point of always keeping consistent contact with. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Leo Hobart & Annie Ruth (Green) Newton, paternal grandparents John & Dorothy (Knight) Koch. Michael graduated from Williamsport High school in 1979 and was an outstanding athlete especially in basketball & football. He then entered the Navy upon graduation. Michael retired from the Navy as Chief Petty Officer in 2000 after 21 years of dedicated service. He then worked for AMSEC and continued his career as a training specialist with SAIC until his diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma in September of this year. Mike enjoyed a great game of golf with his chosen band of characters and entered and won many tournaments. Mike respected and loved his position as assistant golf coach at Kempsville High School. He loved to sing Karaoke specializing in the classic big band singers and nothing made him happier than singing with his family and friends. Mike attained his AA degree and was three credits shy of obtaining his BA degree. His love of family kept him strong. Mike never met a stranger and always remembered everyone who came into his life. He will be forever missed by his family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Dec. 15, 2009, at 10:00 am at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at NAS Oceana Naval Base, Virginia Beach Va. He will be recognized with full military honors. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Per Mike's request, the ceremony will be closed casket.
