Obituary

Mervale (Murph) Louis Edlund, 98, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Grace Laraine Edlund who passed away on November 23, 2007.

Born on December 11, 1924, in Moline, Illinois, he was the son of the late Morris Edlund and Katherine Konopelski. Graduated from Reading (PA) High School in 1942 and met the love of his life Grace in 1945, and they were married in 1947. Murph was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, a 76-year member of the Masonic Medairy Lodge, a member of the American Legion Post 211 SAL, and a Jack Daniels Tennessee Squire. He and his wife were founding members of the youth bowling programs in Hagerstown, where they coached for over 20 years. He also bowled in a tenpin league until he was 95 years old. After attending the University of Illinois, he worked as a civil engineer for the railroad his entire career. Starting with the Long Island Railroad, then the Army Corps of Engineers, and moved his family in 1957 to Hagerstown where he worked for the Western MD Railway, B&O Railroad, Chessie System and retiring from CSX in 1985. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved Grace, traveling with friends, and visiting family. One of the greatest joys and blessings in his life was the time he spent with his grandson Jordon, and their undeniable bond.

Murph is survived by his children, George Edlund and wife, Gina of Greenback, TN, Christopher Edlund of Hagerstown, and grandson, Jordon Edlund of Danville, PA. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Elizabeth Edlund, his sisters, Caroline and Virginia.

The family will receive friends on Friday December 1, 2023, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd, Hagerstown, between 5-7pm. A celebration of his life will be held following visitation, at the Funkstown American Legion Post 211. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Washington County Humane Society.
