Melvin L. Barnes, Sr., 83, of 15431 National Pike, Hagerstown, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center. Born May 15, 1928, in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Ernest Barnes and Mable (Mauk) Barnes. He had been married to his wife, Agnes Eva Barnes, for 54 years, who died in February of 2009. He is a veteran having enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946. He worked as a mechanical engineer at Kelly Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland Maryland for nearly thirty years. He was awarded the Carnegie Hero Award for saving the life of Kevin Stangle, Jr. in 1980 by pulling Mr. Stangle from an overturned burning vehicle in Funkstown, Maryland during which Melvin Barnes suffered third degree burns himself. He is survived by his son, Melvin L. Barnes Jr. of Henderson, Nevada; three grandchildren and his sister Dorothy Sell of Baltimore MD. He was preceded in death by his sister Evelyn and brother Norwood. There will be no viewing. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport. The Rev. Robert V. Robinson will officiate. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the American Legion, Morris Frock Post #42 of Hagerstown, MD.
