SGM Maxwell Junior Miller, 80, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on November 5, 2025. He was born to the late Wareham Maxwell Miller and Bernice Leona Smith Trumpower.

He was a 1963 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

Shortly after graduating, Maxwell joined the United States Army. He served with special assignments such as Intelligence and USAEUR Theater of Operations.

SERGEANT MAJOR (E9) MAXWELL J MILLER served 32 years earning himself a CERTIFICATE OF RETIREMENT FROM THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in 2005.

Maxwell’s education includes 4 degrees with 2 majors, which includes an Associate of Arts degree from Hagerstown Junior College, a Bachelor of Science from Shepherd University, an MBA from Frostburg State University. For many years, Maxwell worked as a claims investigator for First Data in Hagerstown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Miller and his half-brother, Otmer M. Clifton.

He is survived by his former wife Patricia Mahoney Miller, daughters, Barbara Miller, Karen Miller Purdy; husband Shane, and daughter-in-law, Heidi Onufrak.

Five grandchildren, Branden, Quinlan, Kaylon, Kalena, and Michael. As well as five great-grandchildren. Family and friends are welcomed for a Memorial Service on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 12:00pm at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard in Hagerstown.

A graveside service will immediately follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W Washington Street in Hagerstown.
