Obituary

Max Leroy Spicer, 77, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Sunday, March 1, at Meritus Medical Center. Born August 9, 1937, in Tyrone, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph Edward and Rosella Margaret Shultz Spicer. Max was a member of the Tyrone High School class of 1955, and while in high school served as a forest fire fighter. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955-1961 and was promoted to Sergeant. While in the Marines he was stationed in Korea, Okinawa and Japan where he worked as a Field Radio Operator. For eleven years he was employed by West Vaco in Tyrone. In 1970 he began working for Roadway as a dock supervisor and dispatcher. Before retiring in 1999, he worked at the Harrisburg, PA, Hagerstown, and Winchester, VA, locations. He was a member of the Valley Grace Brethren Church. Other memberships included the Masonic Blue Lodge #494 F. & A. M., Tyrone, American Legion Post 202, Williamsport, MD, and the Izaak Walton League of America. As a young man, Max earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Tyrone Troop 20, where he later served as an assistant Scoutmaster. In Hagerstown he volunteered as an advisor with Troop 136, where both of his sons earned the same rank. Max had a gentle, quiet nature that made him easy to talk to. He loved learning, was knowledgeable about many things, and could converse about various topics. It was very common for employees from other Roadway terminals to call with questions and say, "Just put Max on the phone." Children were drawn to Max; he won the hearts of neighbors' children by listening to their stories and giving them treats. Max also had a special way with animals. He loved watching the birds and squirrels that came to feed in their backyard, especially those who specifically "asked" to be fed. Max is survived by his wife, Florence Ormsby Spicer, of 53 years; two sons, James (Jim) L., and wife, Christy Eshleman Spicer, of Hagerstown, and Timothy (Tim) A., and wife, Kimberly (Kim) Smith Spicer, of Williamsport; two granddaughters, Michelle L. Burkett and Cassie L. Spicer, and fianc, Dustin Horchner, all of Williamsport; one sister, Patricia (Pat) M. Westley, one brother, Dale E. Spicer, both of Tyrone, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Miriam (Mame) Mogle, and a brother, Clarence Cecil Spicer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 2 pm at Valley Grace Brethren Church. Rev. Daniel J. Pritchett will officiate. Military honors will be provided by Veteran Service Organizations of Washington County. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
