Obituary

Mary Louise Wagner Simons, affectionately known as Mary, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Monday evening, February 24, 2025, in Hagerstown, MD, at the age of 76.

Born August 30, 1948, in Elkins, West Virginia to parents Glenn and Clara Helman.

Mary was a beacon of love, laughter and joy for all who surrounded her.

Mary graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1966, starting her journey to pave her own path in the world. With a few jobs early in her life, she found a career at Pangborn in 1978 and continued her career there until 2001. Later in 2001, she started at Ft. Detrick and retired in 2022. Her work ethic and dedication to her jobs was always a focal point in her career where she succeeded for many years.

Beyond her professional career endeavors, Mary's heart was always with her family. She leaves behind her husband, Rick Simons; her daughter, Kristyn Purdham; grandson, Jordan Purdham; her brothers and sister, David Helman and wife, Rose, Roger Helman and wife, Becki, Donald Helman and wife, Cindy, and sister, Sue Kramm and husband, Jim; as well as nieces and nephews, stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Clara Helman, and her sister, Glenda Helman.

Mary's passions that she truly enjoyed and brought her the most joy was her love for sunflowers and anything that had them on it; her unwavering love for the Baltimore orioles, in which she would watch no matter when the games started and finished; her love for Hallmark movies, especially her Christmas specials; as well as her love for watching her grandson's baseball games and her brother Roger and Donalds softball games. Mary left behind a bright spot in many hearts. She left many memories filled with kindness, laughter, generosity, and most of all, her love. She was a kind and loving soul and will be cherished by all who were lucky to meet her and will be deeply missed and remembered.

Mary's viewing will be held at Minnich Funeral Home in Hagerstown, MD, on Sunday, March 2nd from 3pm-5pm. Her funeral services will be at Rose Hill Cemetery on Monday, March 3rd starting at 2pm.
