Mary Virginia
Smith
Dec 31, 1940 — Mar 19, 2026
We come together today to celebrate the life of Mary Virginia Smith, a cherished member of the Hagerstown community, who passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 19, 2026, at the age of 85.
Born on the last day of 1940 in the very town she would come to shape with her gentle spirit and loving heart, Mary's life was a testament to her unwavering kindness and thoughtful nature.
Mary, known affectionately to friends and family simply as "Mary," was the beloved widow of Harold E Smith Sr., who predeceased her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication in her daughter, Stephanie L Smith, and son-in-law Todd L Strite of Greencastle, PA, as well as her granddaughter, Melody and son-in-law Drew Camacho. Her joy was multiplied with the birth of her three great-grandchildren, Lydia Sites, Tucker Sites, and Bronx Camacho, all of Mercersburg, PA, who will carry forward the light of her wisdom and warmth.
An alumna of a local business school, Mary's professional journey began at Double Day, where her keen eye and meticulous nature served her well as a proofreader. She later brought her talents to State Farm, where she worked as a secretary, known for her efficiency and grace under pressure. Mary's colleagues will remember her not just for her professional acumen but also for the kindness she extended to everyone she encountered.
Her interests were a reflection of her inner beauty. Mary had a passion for music, which filled her home and heart with melodies that spoke to her soul. Gardening was another of her joys, with her hands nurturing the earth to bring forth blooms that mirrored the beauty she saw in the world. Needlework was a craft she pursued with patience and precision, creating intricate designs that were as much a part of her as her gentle smile. Traveling was a source of wonder for Mary, as she cherished the opportunity to explore new places and cultures, always with a sense of adventure and appreciation.
Those who knew Mary would describe her as loving, gentle, and thoughtful. Her presence was a comfort, her advice a sought-after gift, and her laughter resonated in the hearts of those who loved her.
As we bid farewell to Mary Virginia Smith, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were privileged to share with her. Her spirit, a blend of compassion and strength, will continue to inspire and guide us. Mary's journey on this earth may have come to a close, but the story of her life will be recounted with fondness and admiration for generations to come.
Services will be planned at a later date at the convenience of the family.
