MARY ELIZABETH SHIFLER, 81, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away, surrounded by her family, Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Meritus Medical Center. Born July 19, 1931 in Frederick, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Roger Eugene and Grace Almega Roelke. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Seibert C. "Sy" Shifler who died November 7, 2006. She graduated from Frederick High School. Mary worked with her husband as part owner of Shifler Electric. She was a member of Benevola United Methodist Church and was a former member of Antietam Lioness Club. She enjoyed the companionship of her pet dog, Sophie and appreciated the helping hands of neighbors in her community. In Mary and Sy's retirement years, they loved spending the winters in Florida and enjoyed spending time with their family. She is survived by two daughters, Laura Anderson, and husband Kirk, of Williamsport, Md. and Barbara Younkins, and husband Harold, of Hagerstown; two sons, Carroll Shifler, and wife Pat, of Hagerstown and Donald Shifler, and wife Andrea, of Boonsboro; a sister, Dolores Notnagle of Frederick; eight grandchildren, Lindsay, Judy, Penny, Daniel, Michael, Karen, Tony and Dawn and seven great-grandchildren, Jared, Kylee, Keith, Matthew, Ryan, Shaymus and Adam, Jr. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Helfrich. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Md. The Rev. John H. Dean will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.
