Mary Helen Helmer, 86, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at her home.

Born December 22, 1939, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Daniel and Ellen Catherine (Crist) Keller.

Mary Helen was a graduate of St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School and was employed with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. She was a proud Democrat and was deeply devoted to her family.

Mary Helen cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and took great pride in watching them grow. Family was at the heart of her life, and she will be remembered for her generous and giving spirit. She especially treasured family gatherings, which were among her favorite times. She loved having those closest to her together, creating special moments and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Fowler and husband, Drew; her son, Bill Helmer and wife, Wendy; four grandchildren, Adam Helmer, David Helmer and wife, Sienna, Benjamin Helmer, and Olivia Helmer; and her sister, Jean Keller.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by twelve of her siblings.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 a.m., at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD,

A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD.  Deacon Bill Nairn will be celebrant.
