Obituary

Mary Crowell Smith loved her family and dance students. She was a great conversationalist with a sense of humor and could engage with anyone. She always looked forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren as well as organizing monthly group dances, the most recent being on December 28th. She led tours as a travel agent, taking her dance students, family and friends to many destinations across the globe.

Mary died in her sleep at Spring Arbor in Frederick, MD, aged 92, on January 6th, 2026, the same date as her beloved late husband, Edgar Smith. She was born on May 29, 1933, the only daughter of Herbert Niner and Catherine Niner of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel Crowell III and by her second husband, Edgar Smith, as well as by brothers, John Niner, Herbert Niner Jr, Joseph Niner and Raymond Niner. She is survived by her children, Cathryn (nee Crowell) Wolski husband, Raymond Wolski, Denise (nee Crowell) Schoen and Scott Crowell wife, Colleen. Her grandchildren, Sara Wolski husband, Bryan Dzenkowski, Daniel Wolski, Margaret Patterson (nee Schoen) husband, Larnelle Patterson, Adam Wolski wife, Gisselle, Michael Wolski and Catherine Schoen. She had three great grandchildren, Jeremy Wolski, Malachi Schoen and Vivian Dzenkowski.

Mary was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Class of 1951. She worked at the McCrory's counter in high school, then post-graduation at Fairchild Aircraft, where she was hand-picked to code computer cards for the engineering team for one of the first IBM computer systems. She performed clerical work and drafted blueprints for her brothers. Later, designing and drafting her own house for construction in Spring Valley. Mary was a professionally trained Arthur Murray ballroom dance instructor and taught privately for 62 years until the age of 92. She also taught 7th and 8th graders ballroom dancing at the Women's Club in Hagerstown for decades, starting in 1965.

Volunteer work included teaching gymnastics to grades 1-5 at St. Mary's school, teaching ballroom dancing to students at St. Maria Goretti and fundraising through dances for St. Mary's School and other organizations.

As Mary was a long-time member of St. Ann's Church, her funeral mass will be held at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, MD, at 11:00 the morning of Thursday, January 15th. Msgr. J. Bruce Jarboe will officiate. Visitation at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, will be from 6 - 8 p.m. the evening of Thursday, January 14, 2026. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery immediately following the funeral mass.
