Marlin Elaine (Gordon) Leather met her Lord and Savior face to face on August 1, 2021. Born November 3, 1932 in Timberville, VA, she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Pauline Gordon. She graduated from Timberville High School in 1949, and from James Madison University with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught in Culpepper, VA for two years and then married Donald Eugene Leather July 31, 1960. Marlin lived in Smithsburg for 60 years. She taught for several years in Washington County Public schools. She took a few years off to raise her children, then went back to long-term substitute teaching, primarily at Kemp Horn Vocational School. During the summer months, she would substitute at Grace Day Care Center. For many years, she worked part-time at Four Seasons Florist in Smithsburg. She also taught second grade from 1982-1998, 16 years at Grace Academy, then went back to substitute teaching for Washington County Public Schools after that. She was active with Cornerstone Community Church (formerly Grace Brethren Church). She taught Sunday school, helped in the nursery, worked with the youth group, and helped start Grace Day Care Center. Marlin loved to read, make craft items, call church members to give them encouragement and pray for them, and she sent cards to cheer people up. Marlin also loved to travel and took every chance she could to go see new places and meet new people. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Nelson K. Gordon. She is survived by her children, Timothy Leather (wife, Tania) of Colonial Beach, VA, Rosalyn Hoyt (husband, Phillip) of Moncks Corner, SC, and Dwight Leather (wife, Carrie) of Hagerstown, MD; six grandchildren; two great granddaughters; one sister, Bonnie Showalter; and her ex-husband, Donald E. Leather. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. A graveside service, with Rev. Larry Humbard officiating, will be held at 9:30am on Friday, August 6th at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac Street, Hagerstown. A memorial service will follow at 11am at Cornerstone Community Church, 20519 Beaver Creek Road, Hagerstown.
