Marilyn Lee Wood, age 75, went to be with her savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, peacefully on December 19th with her husband by her side after a nearly year-long battle with ALS (aka "Lou Gehrigs Disease). A loving a wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by her husband, Chip; son Stephen Wood; two daughters, Elizabeth Wood and Maria Zombro; and 6 grandchildren, on whom she doted dearly. Marilyn was born and raised in northern Anne Arundel County. She graduated with honors from Brooklyn Park High School in 1961, and went on to receive a B.A. in Education from The College of Notre Dame in 1965. After graduation, Marilyn began her professional career teaching 2nd and 3rd grades in Brooklyn Park. Upon taking courses at night, in June 1971, she completed a M.A. in Education from Loyola University in Baltimore. In May 1971, she met her future husband-to-be, Chip Wood, at an English Country Dance held at a church in Baltimore City. Marilyn enjoyed Chips wit, and Chip was attracted to her ability to nurture and her movie-star beauty. They were married in 1975, enjoying 43 years of marriage together. In early fall of 1989, the family moved to Hagerstown. Marilyn began working as a substitute teacher for W.C.P.S. and teaching literacy to adult students in the evenings. In 1997, she began career teaching positions at the Maryland Department of Corrections at both Roxbury and MCI, retiring in 2005. She continued to work part time at MCI until June 2018 - when ALS made it impossible to continue working. Marilyn took joy in many activities and hobbies which included gardening, homemaking, travel and music. As avid history and travel buffs, she and Chip visited principal Civil War battlefields, the pioneer covered wagon trails, the Louis and Clark Trail, numerous national parks, Hawaii, Alaska, Auschwitz Concentration Camp, and several ocean cruises. Marilyn was a devout Catholic and member of St Marys Church for 27 years. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Marys Catholic Church in Hagerstown, MD at 3:00pm on Friday, January 4, 2019 on what would be Marilyns 76th birthday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am at Minnich Funeral Home in Hagerstown on Saturday, January 5, 2019, followed by burial at Rosehill Cemetery in Hagerstown.
