MARGARET RUTH (PEG) STONE, 87, of 18005 Par Three Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland, died on May 19, 2005 at the Washington County Hospital. Born December 9, 1917 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late E. Wilbur Byer and Mary Dickson Byer. She was a 1934 graduate of Hagerstown High School and a 1938 graduate of Madison College (now known as James Madison University), where she was given a Miss Madison Award. She later did 30 hours of post-graduate work. She was married in 1940 to James W. Stone, Sr. who died in 1991. She was a teacher in the Washington County School System. She began her careeer as a science and math teacher at Woodland Way Junior High in 1938. She left teaching in 1946 when her first son was born, but returned to her chosen career in 1961 at North Potomac Junior High School, where she taught physical education and then science and math, until she retired in 1975. After retiring, she continued to substitute teach for another fifteen years. She was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, and was very active in her church's mission. She was a former Sunday School teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women, the Seekers Sunday School class and the Church's Book Club. She served as Church Historian and as a mentor for confirmands. She also was very active in the Church's charitable and community outreach activities. She was involved in many community activities throughout her life. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, served on its Board of Directors and was active in its annual book sale. She was a past member of Garden Club and Duplicate Bridge Club at Fountain Head. She was a volunteer for REACH and the cold weather shelter and was a volunteer driver for the Commission on Aging. She was a member of the Washington County Retired Teachers Association. She was an outstanding athlete. At Madison, she played basketball, field hockey and track and field, was President of the Athletic Association and Captain of the varsity basketball team, and was selected All-State hockey for two years. Later she was an avid golfer and was a former member of the women's 18-hole and 9-hole associations at Fountain Head Country Club. She played both duckpin and turf bowling. She was a lifelong bridge player and in recent years played duplicate bridge and was a member of the American Contract Bridge League. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Byer Henry of Hague, New York; three sons, James William Stone, Jr. of Hagerstown, and his wife, Colleen, Robert Byer Stone of Hagerstown, and Douglas Alden Stone of Funkstown, Maryland, and his wife, Stephanie; three grandsons, James William Stone, III of Falling Waters, W. Va., and his wife, Vanessa, and David Michael Stone and Benjamin Douglas Stone, both of Funkstown, Maryland; one granddaughter, Betsey Leigh Hayes of Moneta, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Emma Margaret Stone and McPherson James Stone, both of Falling Waters, W. Va.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Byer; and two brothers, William Byer and Robert Byer. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 22, at the MINNICH FUNERAL HOME, 415 East Wilson Boulevard from 6 to 8 p. m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 28 at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown at 1:00 p. m. Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Robison will officiate.
