Obituary

Lois Elizabeth Smith-Gillwald, 82, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born March 4, 1944 in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late George Ellsworth Baker, Sr. and Hazel May (Roof) Baker.

Lois was preceded in death by her first husband, William Raymond Smith, in 2007, and her second husband, Erhard Siegfried Gillwald, in 2025.

She attended North Hagerstown High School and worked in a variety of positions throughout her life. She was known for her caring nature and willingness to help others. She enjoyed playing bingo and took great pride in her appearance, always making sure she looked her best.

Lois is survived by two daughters, Lida Portner and husband, Harry, and Michele Smith and partner, Douglas Claytor; two stepsons, Ralph Gillwald and wife, Cheryl, and Pete Gillwald and wife, Shelley; two grandchildren, Dustin Dyer (Tiffany) and Derek Dyer (Samantha); five great-grandchildren, Myleigh, Madi, Chloe, Jaxon, and Veda; three brothers, George "Skip" Baker, Jr. and wife, Doris, David Baker, and Jeff Baker; and sister-in-law, Judy Baker.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Baker, and sister-in-law, Sue Baker.

The funeral will be held at 11am on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. A viewing will be held at 10am, prior to the service. Burial will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
