Kirby J. Krouse, 90, of Williamsport, MD, died February 2, 2015 at his home. Born on April 10, 1924 in Chewsville, MD. He was the son of the late Edgar Daniel and Laura Shirley Weagley Krouse. He was a graduate of Chewsville High School. He was a veteran of World War II, and received the Silver Star from the President of the United States of America for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 702D Tank Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 27 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, when the platoon leader's tank was disabled and ignited by enemy fire, Staff Sergeant Krouse, the platoon sergeant, immediately took command and ordered the platoon into a protected place and thus prevented further loss from enemy fire. After taking care that his platoon was well deployed, he then drove his own tank to the side of the platoon leader's burning tank and, disregarding the severe enemy fire, left the comparative safety of his own tank to aid in evacuating the wounded crew members from the disabled tank. Sergeant Krouse's initiative and courageous devotion to duty saved his platoon from heavy losses, saved the lives of his fellow soldiers, and exemplify the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army. He was a long time member of Hagerstown Elks No. 378, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, and Washington County AMVETS Post 10. He was a member of Otterbein Methodist Church in Hagerstown. He retired from Fort Ritchie commissary. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Anna M. Krouse, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his four sisters, Mildred "Tillie" Spessard, Virginia, Edna Krouse, and Eleanor Keller, and six brothers, Robert Krouse, Dillon Krouse, Edwin Krouse, Nevin Krouse, Paul Krouse, and Thurman Krouse. No service will be held. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County in the name of Kirby J. Krouse.
