Obituary

Kerstin Elna Maria Clyman, nee Ortendahl, passed on to her next life on November 11, 2023 at the Homewood of Williamsport campus. Born in Christianstad, Sweden on August 10, 1925, she was the daughter of Captain Birger Ortendahl and Maria Ortendahl.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 47 years, Robert Nelson Clyman, her parents, her sister, Brita Hanson, and many dear friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Kerstin Clyman and son-in-law, David Tolino of Middletown, Maryland, her son, Robert Nathan Clyman of Jupiter, Florida, granddaughter Lauren Clyman also of Jupiter, and grandson Austin Clyman of Pompano Beach, Florida.

Raised on the east coast of Sweden in Kalmar, she left her hometown after graduating from high school and moved to Stockholm to attend and graduate from business school. She became an executive secretary at a shipping company and eventually took a leave of absence from her position after World War II ended to live in Paris and study French. After returning to Stockholm, she eventually met and married Bob Clyman in 1956 and became an American citizen within a year.

In addition to her living in Stockholm and Paris, Mr. Clyman's profession lead to their residency in Geneva, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and ultimately, Virginia Beach. Mrs. Clyman moved to the Hagerstown area in 2011 to be near her daughter who considered the ensuing years with her mother nearby a priceless gift.

Her interests were varied and lifelong...geography, history, travel, foreign languages, bridge, art, music, cross country skiing, tennis, and golf. Mrs. Clyman volunteered at the Virginia Beach Public Library for 10+ years and also gave her time to NPR and other causes. She created many beautiful counted cross stitch pieces and was a wonderful cook. Along with her native Swedish, she was fluent in English, Spanish, and French and had working knowledge of German.

There will be no service in the Hagerstown area. Kerstin and Bob Clyman's ashes, together, will be scattered in the Atlantic Ocean in the Virginia Beach area between their two homes, the US and Europe at a later date with family present.

Memorial donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders (doctorswithoutborders.org) and the Virginia Beach Public Library (friendsvblibrary.org).
