After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking as a hobby, and his daughter sold his reproduction furniture at her business. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, working on the farm, and landscaping their home. His neighbors and good friend, Marvin Horst and family, all loved and helped him when they could. He belonged to Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren in Hancock, MD. His pastor, Harry Strite, was a great pastor and friend to him. He enjoyed talking to and keeping up with other church members as well. His motto has always been "You gotta be tough."
