Kathleen Bernice Horst, 84, of Hagerstown, MD, went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, after a long illness and a short stay at Sterling Nursing Home in Boonsboro, MD.
Born December 7, 1938 in Billings, MT, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Charlotte (Wallen) McKinnon.
Kathleen graduated from Messiah College with a business degree. She was a child of God and devoted Christian who practiced her faith all of her life. She was a member of Salem Reformed Church on Salem Church Rd. in Hagerstown and was active on the prayer chain.
Kathleen worked as an office manager for the Utility Supply Company in St. James, MD, before she retired to help care for her daughter, Melody. She previously worked as a store assistant manager for Drug Fair in the late 1980's, was church secretary for Paramount Brethren in Christ Church under Pastor Ralph Wenger, and was a school bus driver for Washington County Public Schools where she drove special needs children for both Kemp Horn and the Marshall Street Education Center. She would dress up as Santa Claus at Christmas time for the children while driving her bus.
Kathleen was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and friend. She will be forever loved by her family and those who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
Kathleen is survived by her beloved husband, Frederick L. Horst; daughter, Kelly Murray and husband, Francis, of Fairfield, PA, son, William Gower of Hagerstown; step daughter, Kelli Mooers and husband Steve of Clear Spring, MD, stepson, Scott Horst and wife, Cora, of Gaithersburg, MD; six grandchildren, Danial Murray, Mikaylah Murray, Kalynn Murray, Cameron Horst, Megan Horst, and Mackenzie Mooers; and one great-grandchild, Lucas Reed Helton.
In addition to her parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her special daughter, Melody Fern Gower; brothers, Lester McKinnon, George McKinnon, Glen McKinnon, and Donald McKinnon; and sisters, Violet McKinnon and Lorraine McKinnon.
The funeral will be held at 11am on Monday, March 27, 2023, at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740. The viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Eric Cox and Pastor Bill Schuit will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem Reformed Church.
