Julia Elizabeth Garrott, 96, passed from this life on Friday, August 17, 2018 at the Williamsport Retirement Village. She was born March 31, 1922 in Hagerstown, MD. Julia graduated as valedictorian from St Marys High School, class of 1940, and Columbia Business School. She was employed by Four States Live Stock and the Maryland Correctional Institution, retiring in 1983. Julia, a devout Catholic respected all religions. She loved life, her family, her faith and her community. She was well known for her smile, her selfless acts of sacrifice and her focus on music and education. Julia played the organ at St. Marys, Hagerstown; St. Josephs, Halfway; and St. Augustines, Williamsport, MD weekly for all services and weddings for over 60 years and mostly as a volunteer. For many years, she taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes at St Josephs. Julia was bestowed the Disciple Medal of Honor by Pope St. John Paul II for her service to the Catholic community. She was also honored as a Catholic Daughter and a Daughter of the American Revolution. She served as a Volunteer at the Western Maryland State Hospital and as a Reading Tutor for the Washington County Public Schools for which she received the Governors Certificate of Appreciation from Parris Glendening. Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Warrant Officer John Warren Garrott Sr, US Army Air Corps. Warren was killed in a military plane crash June 30, 1948 while they were assigned to the Oberpfaffenhoffen AB in Munich, Germany. He was 27. During their time in Germany, 1946 - 48, Julia and Warren never missed an opportunity to contribute to the well being of many of those who were displaced, orphaned and devastated by the war. Thanks to weekly shipments of foodstuffs, clothing and shoes from her family in Hagerstown, they shared whatever supplies and staples were available. Julia was also preceded in death by her parents; former Hagerstown Councilman and Western MD Railway (WMRR) employee of 49 years, Joseph "Jack" Hellane and Ruth Maugans Hellane born in Wolfsville, MD, and by her dearly loved three brothers; Joseph "Jack" G. Hellane Jr, U.S. Navy, WMRR, (Frances, dec.), James Vincent Hellane, US Army, WMRR, (Nancy) both of Hagerstown, John T. Hellane II, Elkton, MD, US Army, Telephone Co, (Peggy), and her nephew, J. Vincent Hellane Jr., US Navy, founder of DVINCI Interactive. She is survived by her two sons; John W. Garrott Jr., BS, DDS (Kathy Bushey), Hagerstown, and David A. Garrott, BS (Carolyn Wayne,) Millsboro, DE, four grandchildren: Elizabeth Garrott, Intl Theatre Artist, Producer and Educator (Jason), of Accra, Ghana; Rochelle Garrott Rauth, RN, MHA, BSN, BSBA (Jason) of Waynesboro, PA,; Lt. Col. Michael David Garrott, USAF Squadron Commander/Pilot, (Meagan), of Okinawa, Japan; and Erika Garrott Johnson, Esquire, (Chuckie), Smithsburg, MD. Julia also dearly loved her surviving two nieces, Peggy Hellane Morrissey (Robert) and Julia Hellane Mikolajski (David); four nephews, Joseph G. Hellane III, (Mary) David L Hellane, (Ginny), John T. Hellane III (Gemma) and Tim Hellane; four great-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2018 at St Josephs Catholic Church, 19630 Virginia Avenue, Halfway, MD. Fr. William P. Garrott, OP, Celebrant.
