Joseph Elwood Stottlemyer, 85, of Hagerstown passed away at the Meritus Medical Center on Sunday, December 27, 2015. Born August 9, 1930, in Smithsburg he was son of the late Ira and Martha Stottlemyer of Hagerstown. Joe worked at the Hagerstown shoe factory for thirty years, and then retired from the Certainteed Corporation after 15 years. He was a machine operator. He was a Korean War veteran. Joe was in the U.S. army from 1951 to 1953. His primary duty station was in Japan. He was a life member of the Williamsport American Legion and also a member of the VFW in Hagerstown. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pearl Stottlemyer. Also, by his son, Darren Stottlemyer and wife Deborah. He has three grandchildren, Hannah and Hadden Stottlemyer of Hagerstown, and Jason Slager of Phillipsburg, NJ. Joe has two surviving brothers, Kenneth Stottlemyer and wife Dorothy of Hagerstown, Roland Stottlemyer and wife Waunetta of Washington D.C.; and their daughter Cindy Kareski. Joe was preceded in death by his brother Robert Stottlemyer of Williamsport. Joe's favorite thing to do was watch the Henderick motorsports team of NASCAR. He also loved watching the TV show NCIS. Joe was a quiet, easy-going, happy person. Anyone who had the good fortune to spend time with him came away a better person for it. He was a great father, husband, and friend. In Joe's final days, he was surrounded by his family and he knew he was loved. He will be dearly missed by many. Services will be held 1pm Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Pastor Bill Divelbiss will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 30 from 6-8pm at Minnich Funeral Home.
