Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Leon Householder, 89, of Williamsport, MD, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Homewood at Williamsport. Born July 14, 1931 in Berkeley Springs, WV, Joe was the son of the late Kelley M. and Letha Hawvermale Householder. He attended Berkeley Springs High School until the age of 16, at which time he decided to become a man of the world and joined the US Army. After boot camp and schooling, he was investigated by the FBI for security clearance, and they discovered that he was not old enough to be in the service. After the Bureau received permission from his father, Joe was legally able to become a member of the US Army. He shipped to Stuttgart, Germany on the USS PATTON, where he spent three years and six months supervising teletype operators. At the end of the stint in Germany, Joe returned to the US on the same ship (the USS PATTON). He spent five years in the Army and six years in the Army Reserves. While on leave to his home in Berkeley Springs, he met Delores Corbin on July 4, 1952. Five months later, they were married. Joe had several different occupations during his life, but the longest was manager of three different banks over the period of twenty plus years. He was a member of the Medairy Lodge No. 140 A.F. & A.M., the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest Lodge No. 95, and the American Legion Post No. 202 in Williamsport. Joe was the middle of seven children: three brothers, Virgil R. Householder, Foster P. Householder, and Ralph Householder; and two sisters, Geneva Householder Paugh and Pauline Householder Cox, all deceased; and survived by his sister, Jean. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Delores Corbin Householder; grandson he adored, Christopher Householder and wife, Allyson (Point of Rocks, MD); daughter-in-law, Kimberly Householder (Falling Waters, WV); sister-in-law, Elizabeth Householder (Martinsburg, WV); sister-in-law, Treva Householder (Florida); and nine nephews and six nieces. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph L. Householder II and infant, David Scott Householder. The funeral service will be held 11am on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Pastor Douglas Wagner will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs, WV following the service. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, January 4, 2021 from 5-7pm. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Homewood at Williamsport, 16505 Virginia Ave, Williamsport, MD 21795.
