John Robert Leight, 96, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016 at Penn Hall Meno Haven. Born February 29, 1920 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late John D. and E. Pearl (Hager) Leight. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madalene (Koontz) Leight, October 5, 2001. They were married in 1940. He graduated from Chambersburg High School, and studied at West Virginia University and Georgetown University. John served in the Army during WWII with H Company 395, 99th Division and 10th Combat Engineers, 3rd Division in Germany. John worked at Piedmont Silk Mill in 1936; Greyline Hosiery in 1938; Western Maryland Railroad as a trackman, brakeman, flagman, and conductor from 1939 to 1981. He was a registered Maryland Lobbyist from 1972 to 1981. He was a member of United Transportation Union, Western Maryland Railway Oldtimers Club, American Legion Post 42, Cardiovascular Health Study, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, Western Maryland Railway Historical Society, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railroad Employees, and National AARP. He managed disability equipment for the West Hagerstown Lions Club, and he was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. John enjoyed playing golf, gardening, and roses. Services will be held 11am Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Chaplain Brenda Doyle will officiate.
